Meet the Dean - Troy Beall

My fascination with woodworking and tools began alongside my father in our old tobacco barn. I watched as he made several pieces of furniture for our home.  As I grew older, he allowed me to use the lathe to turn furniture parts such as table legs and chair spindles. Since that time, I’ve known woodworking was my passion. As a teenager, I worked with my uncle in the homebuilding industry, where I learned how to build a house from start to finish. I took what I learned and in the early 1990s, I started my own construction company, with a focus on homebuilding. I built custom homes for several years where I prided myself on the extra touches including redwood winecellars, custom built-in bookcases, fully enclosed bars and granite kitchens with architectural accents. At the same time, I started doing commercial renovations to help out my parents with their restaurant business. Eventually as their business began to branch out into other states, the nighttime renovations and buildouts began to take its toll on my new family. I decided to focus my efforts locally and I joined up with some local woodworking clubs. I’ve had the opportunity to study under numerous seasoned professionals including Sam Maloof, Michael Dunbar, Cindy Drozda, Jimmy Clewes, Don Derry and many others. These contacts have been invaluable as I’ve had the honor of giving various demonstrations at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery.

I hope to keep the art of working with wood from being lost, while staying near my wife and children. Since shop classes are dying out in the public schools, I built an extensive woodworking shop for the purpose of building furniture and teaching woodworking and woodturning classes to both children and adults.  I strive to give back to the community as much as I’ve received from my fellow woodworkers.
